2025/2026 Fall | CP501 Master Studio: Planetary Urbanization
In the 2025-2026 academic year, fall semester, CP501 – City Planning Master Studio focuses on the theme of Planetary Urbanization, exploring how urbanization has expanded beyond traditional city boundaries to shape landscapes, infrastructures, and societies at a global scale. Students will investigate the processes through which urbanization extends into rural areas, hinterlands, and resource extraction zones, and examine how cities are interconnected through global flows of capital, labor, and materials. The course will emphasize the importance of understanding urbanization as a planetary condition, highlighting the interdependencies between urban cores, peripheral regions, and ecological systems. Through in-depth analysis, students will critically engage with examples of planetary urbanization in diverse contexts and propose strategies to address the socio-spatial and environmental challenges of living in an increasingly urbanized world. Students are encouraged to develop their own focus areas within this broader topic, conducting comprehensive research, analysis, and proposing innovative solutions to reimagine urbanization processes at multiple scales.
