The Master of City Planning is one the oldest graduate programs of the Department of City and Regional Planning at METU. In this context this program complements the undergraduate program of City and Regional Planning through its focus on advanced contemporary research. The graduate program of City Planning excels on the formation of comprehensive research frameworks in a number of specialization areas. Research carried out in the program covers those areas ranging from housing to transportation as well as issues such as economic development, climate change, sustainability, resilience, different aspects of urban development and institutional frameworks of planning.

The aim of graduate City Planning program is to support graduates in their quest to perfect their skills as planners and decision makers. Keeping in mind that graduates will critically intervene the complex problems of urban development in the 21st century, the program is structured to offer an environment in which they can further develop their knowledge towards academic and professional domains. The course of this graduate program accommodates a one-year Studio environment as well as a number of supplementary must and elective courses. The Studio environment encourages and supports interrelated yet independent research projects particularly oriented towards the agenda of planning cities.

Following the first two semesters within which the Studio and courses are completed, students start working on their theses under the supervision of their advisors. At this stage graduate students of the City Planning Program define their thesis topics, based on the knowledge and experience gathered previously. Students of this program chose their advisors based on specialization areas provided by the faculty of City and Regional Planning Department at METU.
